Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula has reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting the completion of Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital (KT&RH).

Speaking at Butere Sub County Hospital alongside Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, Butere Member of Parliament Tindi Mwale, and other national and local leaders, Nakhumicha emphasized the importance of unity among Western leaders to prioritize the hospital’s completion.

She announced plans to assemble a multi-agency team to assess the readiness of the stalled facility for upgrading to a Level Six Hospital, emphasizing its significance as the primary public referral hospital for Kakamega county and neighboring counties such as Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia.

Expressing confidence in the project, Nakhumicha highlighted the necessity for a comprehensive approach, including effective management upon completion. She pledged to lead a multidisciplinary team to evaluate the facility’s status and devise strategies for its successful operation.

Deputy Governor Savula disclosed ongoing discussions with investors from India to provide financial support for equipping the 750-bed capacity facility. He also acknowledged President William Ruto’s commitment of Sh200 million from the supplementary budget to expedite civil works.

Governor Ferdinand Barasa’s administration aims to alleviate congestion at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, promoting medical tourism and improving healthcare access in Western Kenya and Rift Valley.

Additionally, the Health Cabinet Secretary assured approval for the construction of the Kenya Medical and Training College in Butere, primarily funded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund, further showcasing the government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.
