MTRH Board Member visits Children at Shoe4Africa Hospital


Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Board member Dr. Janet Muriuki, accompanied by CEO Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, EBS, today spent the whole morning visiting children admitted at Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital. Dr. Janet had come along with her children Makena & Kaari, and her brother, Ian Chege.

While at the Hospital, the team spent time with a number of the children and participated in face/hand painting and art exercises led by the Hospital’s Child Life specialists.

Dr. Muriuki was touched by the child life play therapy that is designed to ease children’s anxiety during admission and at procedures, as well as providing a safe and psychologically reassuring space within the Hospital for the long-term patients.

She made a personal donation towards the purchase of supplies; crayons, drawing paper, colors, beads, among others, to support the program.

Her daughter Makena, donated some of her artwork as part of her Community Action Service, to be placed in one of the wards within the Children’s Hospital.

The family also promised to donate some books and other material for the MTRH Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital Kuunga Mkono classrooms- the only such classrooms in any Hospital in the country.

Dr. Janet further took time to visit the Hospital’s new Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Generating Plant (OGP) whose capacity is 2000 litres per minute of oxygen.

During her tenure as MTRH Board member, Dr. Muriuki has been instrumental in staff welfare and enhancing good work environment. She played oversight on all clinical operations, quality assurance, standards and research. Dr. Janet oversaw developmental projects including purchase of radiotherapy equipment, new Laundry & Kitchen and LPG Gas installation amongst other projects of key strategic value to MTRH and the country at large. She ably acted as MTRH Board Chair for 1 year during 2017/18 Financial Year.

Also present were: Senior Director, Clinical Services, Dr. Philip Kirwa; Director Paediatrics & Child Life Services Dr. Polycarp Mandi; Principal Administrator, Selah Plapan; Nurse Manager, Sarah Kimetto; Health Administrative Officer, Delphine Omondi; Head of Child Life Services, Ernest Kirui and staff from the Unit.
