Health Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe, EGH, today 26th August, 2021 commissioned five Strategic Projects at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
They included; Data Centre, ICT Network Upgrade and High Definition CCTV, MTRH Radiotherapy Equipment, MTRH Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Diseases Centre, Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Generating Plant (OGP) producing 2000 LPM of Oxygen and MTRH Nawiri Recovery & Skills Centre.
Speaking to the press immediately after commissioning the projects, the CS praised the Hospital’s Board & Management for prudent deployment of resources. He praised the Chairman and CEO for their able stewardship of the Institution.
During the same function, the CS also launched NHIF Biometric Patient Registration & E- Claims System that is intended to scale up service delivery by reducing the waiting time for patients.
Sen. Kagwe noted that MTRH Oxygen Plant comes in handy when the country is battling the COVID-19 Pandemic that has exerted enormous pressure on many hospitals in the Country. He said MTRH is producing 2 tonnes of Oxygen daily which is a big step in the country’s demands of the commodity.
He gave an example of Kenyans who needed oxygen today at 700 across the country- a testimony that outlines importance of oxygen in patient care.
CS Kagwe urged other public healthcare providers in the country to emulate MTRH Management for its transparency and sound leadership. He was pleased to note that MTRH has remained top in Performance Management, sustaining and cascading the system to all Departments and to all Staff.
He revealed that the Ministry of Health supported the Hospital through acquisition of Linear Accelerator which has seen 117 patients receive treatment since February 2021.
Other than the Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy services, MTRH offers Brachytherapy services
which has seen patients coming from Uganda to seek treatment.
The Cabinet Secretary lauded the partnerships that have thrust MTRH to the International stage in healthcare service delivery.
While Commissioning MTRH Nawiri Recovery & Skills Centre, Sen.Kagwe was impressed noting that the Centre is the first such transitional and homely environment for discharged mentally ill patients.The Ministry of Health would consider coming up with a Policy framework on developing similar regional centres across the country.
He added that Nawiri enables patients to lead respectable lives making them feel valued in the society.
He urged the community to treat mental health as any other disease saying what the sick need is support for them to recover well and be reintegrated well in the society.
The CS Health stated that the Government of Kenya has scheduled 20 more Oxygen Plants across the country. That currently, MTRH is producing the highest level of Oxygen in the Country.
He thanked MTRH partners comprising the Consortium of North American Universities led by Indiana University,The World Bank and USAID among others.
The Cabinet Secretary also gave an update on vaccinations in the country which has so far seen 2.6 million Kenyans vaccinated against COVID- 19. He also noted that 7 million doses have been received and urged all Kenyans to be vaccinated.
MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS, pointed out that the Hospital is now supplying oxygen to every patient bed through the piping system which ensures great efficiency.
He said the Hospital has sixty two (62) ICU beds.
