County Government of Uasin Gishu Prepares to Launch HIV Testing and Counseling Short Course at Local Schools


In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare services within Uasin Gishu County, a team from the county government recently visited schools under the leadership of Mr. Charles Koech, the Eldoret National Polytechnic Chief chief principal.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the readiness of the educational institutions to host a forthcoming short course on HIV Testing and Counseling Services (HTS).

Accompanying Mr. Koech were Mr. Amos Taboi and Mr. Daniel Bett, the County AIDS and STI Coordinators (CASCO) for Uasin Gishu, alongside Mr. Mathew Yano, Head of the Liberal Department. Their assessment focused on evaluating the facilities and resources available at the schools to ensure they meet the requirements for effective training in HTS.

During the visit, Mr. Charles Koech expressed gratitude for the partnership with the county government, highlighting the importance of educating students on HIV/AIDS prevention and management. He emphasized the role of educational institutions in fostering a healthier community through knowledge dissemination and practical training.

Mr. Amos Taboi and Mr. Daniel Bett underscored the significance of launching the HTS short course, noting its potential to empower students with life-saving skills. They outlined the curriculum’s objectives, which include equipping participants with comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS, effective counseling techniques, and the importance of confidentiality and empathy in healthcare settings.

Mr. Mathew Yano, representing the academic perspective, affirmed the schools’ commitment to integrating practical healthcare training into the educational framework. He emphasized the benefits of such initiatives in preparing students for both future careers in healthcare and responsible citizenship.

The forthcoming HTS short course is expected to be rolled out in collaboration with local healthcare professionals and educational experts. It aims to provide students with accredited certification upon completion, thereby enhancing their employability and community service capabilities.
