The Church has been identified as a key ally in addressing the growing menace of alcohol and drug abuse (ADA) in society. In a concerted effort to tackle this issue, the Nairobi County NACADA office held a sensitization session for about 100 religious leaders from various denominations within the county.
The event aimed to equip religious
leaders with knowledge and tools to prevent and manage alcohol and drug abuse
within their congregations and communities. Reverend Fredrick Ngugi, a NACADA
Board Member and the National Chairman of APECK, has always been very
outspoken emphasizing the Church's
responsibility in curbing this social menace.
Reverend Ngugi, widely recognized for
his vocal stance against alcoholism, issued a passionate call to parents,
guardians, and caregivers to remain vigilant, particularly during the festive
season.
“This is a time of celebration and
joy, but it is also a vulnerable period when young people may be tempted to
engage in alcohol abuse,” Rev. Ngugi warned. “Parents and guardians must be
watchful to protect the youth from making harmful choices. Additionally,
alcohol outlets must adhere to regulations and refrain from selling to underage
individuals.”
The sensitization session underscored
the pivotal role religious institutions can play in fostering awareness and
promoting a culture of responsibility. By leveraging their moral authority and
influence, churches can become safe spaces for counseling, rehabilitation, and
advocacy against alcohol and drug abuse.
NACADA remains committed to
collaborating with faith-based organizations and other stakeholders to address
the ADA crisis, especially among the youth. Reverend Ngugi’s call to action
serves as a reminder that the fight against alcohol and drug abuse requires a
collective effort, particularly during times of celebration.
As the festive season unfolds,
families, communities, and institutions are encouraged to stay vigilant and
proactive in creating an environment that nurtures the well-being of the
younger generation. Together, we can turn the tide against alcohol and drug
abuse in society.
