Uasin Gishu, Kenya – The construction of the Ainabkoi Potato Processing and Storage Plant is progressing well, marking a significant milestone in the county’s agricultural development. The facility, once complete, is expected to revolutionize potato farming in Ainabkoi Sub County, which contributes over 75 percent of Uasin Gishu’s total potato production.
The plant is designed with state-of-the-art features, including a cold room and a fully equipped packhouse. These will enable farmers to store their produce efficiently, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance the value of their crops through processing.
Governor Jonathan Bii, in a statement, highlighted the importance of the project, noting that it would significantly improve the livelihoods of local farmers by providing them with the necessary infrastructure to preserve their produce and gain better returns on their investments.
“We are committed to supporting our farmers by providing them with modern facilities that help preserve their hard work and increase their earnings. The Ainabkoi Potato Processing and Storage Plant is a major step towards achieving that goal,” Governor Bii said.
The plant’s cold storage facility will allow farmers to keep their potatoes fresh for longer periods, addressing the challenge of spoilage that often leads to substantial losses. Additionally, the packhouse will enable value-added processing, opening up new markets for processed potato products.
This development is expected to create jobs, attract more investment in agriculture, and enhance the overall economy of the region. As the construction of the plant continues, there is optimism that it will serve as a model for other regions looking to invest in agricultural infrastructure.
