Court Orders Halt on Defamatory Advertisements by Royal Media Services against Directline Assurance Company

The Court has granted Directline Assurance Company’s request to stop Royal Media Services from airing a defamatory media campaign on their TV and radio stations. The campaign falsely claimed that “any insurance covers issued by Directline Assurance Company are invalid, and Royal Credit Limited cannot guarantee payment of any claims by Directline.”

In response to the misleading advert, the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) issued a statement on 23rd December 2024, assuring the public that “All insurance policies issued by Directline Assurance Company Limited remain in full force and effect. Policyholders can rest assured that their contracts remain valid, and the insurer is fully liable for any claims arising therefrom.”

Directline’s Acting Principal Officer, Sammy Kanyi, confirms that the company continues to pay valid claims, stating “between 1st and 21st January 2025, Directline had disbursed Kshs 108 million in claims, with Kshs 16.8 million paid out on 21st January 2025 alone”.

This follows a media briefing held by Directline on 16th January 2025 in Nairobi, where the company’s intermediaries and partners in the PSV sector reaffirmed that Directline is operational, issuing insurance covers and settling all valid claims.
