The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, officially launched the newly formed National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) during a ceremony at Jacaranda Resort in Kwale County. The event, which marked the closure of the week-long APS Senior Commanders’ Conference, also unveiled the APS Service Delivery Roadmap for 2025-2028.
CS Murkomen commended the Administration Police Service (APS) for its vital role in maintaining security across the country, particularly in challenging areas such as Kenya’s borders and regions affected by banditry and cattle rustling. He emphasized the importance of NGAPU in reinforcing national security efforts and ensuring enhanced service delivery to the public.
“The NGAPU is a crucial addition to our security framework,” said Murkomen. “It will support the National Government Administration Office (NGAO) in ensuring security during high-risk operations, collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, and assist in conflict management and peace-building initiatives.”
The launch of the NGAPU is seen as a strategic move to improve coordination and strengthen Kenya’s security infrastructure, particularly in high-risk regions. Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, expressed his support for the new unit, noting that its establishment underscores the National Police Service’s commitment to enhancing service delivery and operational effectiveness.
NGAPU will also play an integral role in national security operations, focusing on border protection, crime prevention, and conflict resolution. The new unit is expected to foster better cooperation among various security agencies, including the Kenya Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and other partners in law enforcement.
The event was attended by key government officials, including PS Internal Security Dr. Raymond Omollo, PS Public Service Ms. Anne Ngetich, IPOA Chairperson Mr. Ahmed Issack Hassan, and NPSC Chairperson Mr. Eliud Kinuthia, among others. Senior officers from the Kenya Police, Administration Police Service, and DCI also participated in the occasion.
As part of the APS Senior Commanders' Conference, the launch of NGAPU and the accompanying Service Delivery Roadmap are seen as significant steps towards modernizing Kenya’s police service and addressing the evolving security challenges in the country.
