Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Eliud Lagat, today presided over the Passing-Out ceremony for 400 National Police Reservists (NPRs) in Laisamis, Marsabit County. The reservists, drawn from local communities, successfully completed an intensive four-week training program aimed at enhancing their capacity to support the National Police Service (NPS) in maintaining peace and security within the region.
The training covered a wide range of essential skills, including general police duties, weapon handling, safety protocols, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding strategies. These skills are crucial for the NPRs, who assist the NPS in line with Chapter 54 of the Service Standing Orders. Their role is to bolster security efforts and ensure the safety of local communities, especially in areas where the regular police force may have limited presence.
Deputy IG Eliud Lagat, in his address during the ceremony, commended the newly trained reservists for their dedication and hard work, acknowledging the importance of their service in maintaining peace within the region. "You are now an integral part of our national security apparatus, and your work will help ensure peace and stability in Marsabit and the broader region," Lagat said.
The event was attended by several key leaders, including Hon. Joseph Lekuton, Member of Parliament for Laisamis; Hon. Rasso Dido, Member of Parliament for Saku; Colonel (Rtd) Kenneth Kimani, KPS Director of NPR; Mr. John Nyoike, Deputy Regional Police Commander for Eastern Region; Mr. Kimaiyo, County Police Commander for Marsabit; and Mr. James Kamau, the County Commissioner for Marsabit. Their presence underscored the strong support for the National Police Reserve initiative within the local leadership.
Following the ceremony, Deputy IG Lagat, aboard the 5Y-SFA police helicopter piloted by Captain Evans Okoth, Assistant Superintendent of Police, undertook a tour of Laisamis Police Station and Isiolo. During the visit, he held discussions with county security officers to assess the ongoing security situation and explore further measures to enhance collaboration between the NPS and local authorities.
The passing-out ceremony marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen community policing and enhance security in Marsabit County, a region that has faced challenges with insecurity in recent years. The newly trained NPRs are expected to play a vital role in addressing these challenges, ensuring that law and order are maintained, and fostering peace within their communities.
