Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has today announced that the ongoing Last Mile Connectivity Program is set to expand its reach, with plans to connect an additional 1 million customers in the 2025-2026 period. The announcement was made during a briefing with senior officials from the State Department for Energy, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), outlining the government's ongoing efforts to improve electricity access across the country.
In his address, Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the importance of expanding electricity infrastructure to underserved areas, noting that the Last Mile Connectivity Program is a critical part of the government's agenda to enhance economic opportunities and improve living standards for Kenyans, especially in rural and peri-urban areas.
"The Last Mile Connectivity Program is a key priority for this administration as it directly impacts the daily lives of millions of Kenyans," said Deputy President Kindiki. "By increasing the number of connected customers, we are not only providing reliable electricity to households, but also empowering local industries and businesses to grow, thereby driving economic development."
The Deputy President also highlighted the government's commitment to addressing challenges affecting power generation and evacuation, ensuring the reliability of electricity supply across the country. This includes ongoing initiatives to improve power generation capacity and enhance the efficiency of electricity transmission and distribution networks.
"We are also focused on resolving existing challenges in power generation and evacuation. These efforts will guarantee that once we connect more customers, we can deliver reliable and consistent power to households and industries alike," Kindiki added.
In addition, the update from the State Department for Energy and Kenya Power officials revealed the progress made in the completion of several power projects, including infrastructure upgrades and the expansion of renewable energy sources.
The Deputy President's remarks came as part of the government's broader commitment to meet Kenya's growing energy needs and support the realization of the nation's development goals. The Last Mile Connectivity Program is a significant step towards achieving universal electricity access and fostering inclusive growth across the country.
