Elgeyo Marakwet County Distributes Pyrethrum Seeds to 1,850 Farmers in Wealth Creation Campaign

The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has expanded its wealth creation strategy campaign to Metkei and Kaptarakwa Wards in Keiyo South Sub-County, where over 1,850 farmers received pyrethrum seeds. This initiative is aimed at boosting household incomes through cash crop farming and reducing poverty levels in the county.

The distribution of pyrethrum seeds is part of a larger effort to enhance earnings, promote savings and investments, and protect assets while managing debts. Elgeyo Marakwet County remains the only county in Kenya to have formulated such a comprehensive wealth creation strategy, which focuses on addressing the poverty index through sustainable agriculture and financial management.

Diversifying into Cash Crops
Speaking during the event, Chief Officer for Agriculture, Mr. Edwin Komen, urged farmers to shift from reliance on traditional crops like maize and explore more lucrative cash crops such as pyrethrum, avocados, and coffee.

“Let us not only rely on traditional crops such as maize. We can earn more if we grow pyrethrum, avocados, coffee, and many other cash crops. This will ensure we not only meet our basic needs but also save any surplus for future growth,” said Mr. Komen.

Setting Financial Goals
Dr. Robert Lagat, the County Livestock Chief Officer, emphasized the importance of financial planning and diversification for wealth creation.

“Achieving financial growth is possible if we set clear financial goals, diversify investments to mitigate risks, and protect existing wealth. With this approach, we can transform our earnings from meager resources to substantial wealth capable of meeting our financial obligations,” said Dr. Lagat.

Expanding Pyrethrum Farming
The County Government has set an ambitious target of cultivating over 4,000 acres of pyrethrum by 2027. This campaign, which includes the distribution of high-quality pyrethrum seeds, is expected to significantly contribute to achieving that goal.

Stakeholders Emphasize Sustainability and Market Readiness
Mr. Emanuel Birir, Chief Officer for Lands, encouraged residents to utilize the natural resources at their disposal for long-term prosperity.

Amon Melly, Regional Manager for North Rift, assured farmers of a ready market for pyrethrum, easing concerns about the profitability of the crop.

Other officials present included Philemon Toroitich and Susan Chebii (Ward Agricultural Officers), Richard Opudo (Sub-County Agricultural Officer), Janet Machenje (Industrial Crops Officer), Theophilus Ayabei (Ward Administrator, Metkei), and Beatrice Magel (Ward Administrator, Kaptarakwa).

This campaign highlights the county government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector, empowering farmers, and creating sustainable livelihoods. Farmers expressed optimism about the program, noting that pyrethrum farming could become a key driver of economic growth in the region.

As the County Government continues its efforts, farmers are encouraged to embrace cash crop farming and take advantage of the opportunities provided to improve their living standards and secure a brighter future for their families.
