Firefighters Contain Fierce Kapsoya Fire as County Urges Caution During Dry Season

Firefighters from Uasin Gishu County successfully extinguished a bushfire in Kapsoya Estate on Wednesday, averting a potential disaster amid the ongoing dry season. The fire, fueled by strong winds and hot weather, posed a significant challenge to the firefighting team.

According to residents, the blaze originated near the Eldoret Special School staff quarters after an individual lit a fire in an attempt to kill a snake that had appeared in the area during the afternoon. The flames quickly spread, raising fears of massive destruction in the densely populated neighborhood.

The county firefighting team, led by Chief Fire Officer David Sitati, responded swiftly to an alert raised by Naiberi police officers. Sitati commended his team for their prompt intervention and emphasized the importance of vigilance during this dry season.

“We urge residents to remain cautious and provide timely information whenever such incidents occur. Rapid response is critical to preventing widespread destruction,” said Sitati.

County Government Reaffirms Commitment
On Monday, County Executive for Roads, Engineer Joseph Lagat, urged residents to stay vigilant and keep the county emergency numbers—0710646464, 0532061185, and 0706389888—readily available for reporting any incidents.

Lagat also highlighted the county government’s commitment to addressing fire outbreaks promptly, particularly during this period of increased incidents due to the dry weather.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our residents. Please exercise caution and report any suspicious activities or potential fire risks immediately. Together, we can reduce the risks posed by such incidents,” stated Lagat.

Rising Fire Incidents a Cause for Concern
The Kapsoya fire is one of several fire incidents reported in the county during the dry season. The hot and windy weather has exacerbated the risk of bushfires, making timely reporting and swift response essential to mitigating damage.

Local authorities have also reminded residents to avoid lighting fires outdoors, especially in areas prone to dry vegetation, and to take extra precautions when handling fire in their homes and farms.

The successful containment of the Kapsoya fire is a testament to the effectiveness of the county’s emergency response team, but officials continue to stress the need for public cooperation in preventing similar occurrences in the future.

As the dry season persists, the county government urges all residents to prioritize safety and adhere to fire prevention guidelines to protect lives, property, and the environment.
