Former Eldoret Water and Sanitation Services (EldOWAS) Managing Director Peter Biwott has raised alarm over his safety after being attacked by a group of rowdy youth during a funeral in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County, on Monday.
Biwott, who has been an outspoken critic of the county government, especially under Governor Jonathan Bii's leadership, believes his recent public criticism is behind the attack. He claims that some members within the county administration are not comfortable with his vocal stance on issues of accountability.
The former MD shared his experience after he recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) at the Langas Police Station. He explained that had he not acted swiftly, the situation could have escalated further, possibly putting his life at risk.
"I urge the people of Uasin Gishu to stay vigilant and help protect me as my life is in danger," Biwott said. "If I had not been smart, they could have attacked me. I managed to drive to the burial ceremony, and I sought assistance from leaders, who helped me, and I was escorted to safety."
Biwott further revealed that he has been receiving threatening messages, adding that the attacks and threats are linked to his outspoken criticism of local government officials. He has called on President William Ruto to intervene and ensure that political intolerance does not escalate further in his home region.
"I have reported these threats to the DCI and want them to follow up on the numbers involved. We cannot allow this county to become a haven for goons. Action must be taken against those behind this,"Biwott emphasized.
The attack on Kibiwott has raised concerns over the growing political intolerance in Uasin Gishu, with many questioning the level of security for individuals critical of local authorities. The DCI is now investigating the matter as Biwott continues to demand protection and justice.
This incident highlights the rising tensions in the region, where political clashes have often turned violent, and serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding free expression and public safety.
