Former Dagoretti South Member of Parliament, Dennis Waweru, has called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to step down, citing what he describes as mismanagement in the county government. Waweru, speaking at a public event, expressed his concerns over the deteriorating state of the capital city, emphasizing that basic services such as garbage collection and drainage maintenance have been poorly managed under Sakaja’s leadership.
Waweru, who has previously served in various leadership roles in Nairobi, pointed out the worsening traffic congestion in the city, exacerbated by recent floods that have left many Nairobians stranded on the roads. He attributed this to the county's failure to address long-standing infrastructural issues, including the blocked drainage systems that contribute to the recurrent flooding during the rainy season.
“The people of Nairobi are suffering daily,” Waweru said. “Our streets are flooded, our roads are gridlocked, and people are spending hours stuck in traffic. This is not a situation that should be allowed to persist in a city with a budget of Ksh. 30 billion. Yet, simple tasks like unclogging drainage systems and collecting garbage are being neglected.”
Waweru's comments reflect growing frustration among Nairobi residents, who have witnessed the city's infrastructure issues worsen in recent months. He further criticized the Nairobi County government for what he sees as a lack of accountability and leadership in managing the city’s basic services, which are vital for the well-being of its residents.
In his call for Sakaja’s resignation, Waweru questioned how the Nairobi County government, with significant financial resources at its disposal, could fail to address such critical issues. “Nairobians deserve better. If the leadership cannot deliver on these fundamental services, it is time for a change at the helm,” he added.
Governor Sakaja has yet to respond publicly to Waweru's demand, but his administration has faced increasing scrutiny over its handling of the city's infrastructure and public services. As Nairobi grapples with these challenges, many citizens are eager for concrete solutions that will address the city’s growing problems and improve the quality of life for its residents.
