Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has revealed that his administration is finalizing a new program aimed at addressing the financial challenges faced by dairy farmers in paying school fees. The program, which will see cooperatives partner with local schools, is designed to ensure that farmers who supply milk to cooperatives can continue to educate their children without financial strain.
Governor Bii, who has been a strong advocate for the agricultural sector, particularly dairy farming, made the announcement following discussions with Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative Chairman Paul Tiret, officials from the Ministry of Cooperatives, and representatives from Space AI. The talks focused on how the dairy sector can play a pivotal role in supporting both farmers and students through innovative partnerships with schools.
"The dairy sector is crucial to both the economy and the livelihood of many families in Uasin Gishu and beyond. However, despite their hard work and milk deliveries to cooperatives, many of our farmers are struggling to meet the financial demands of school fees for their children," Governor Bii said. "This new initiative will help ease that burden by enabling cooperatives to work directly with schools, ensuring that our students' education remains uninterrupted."
The program will allow cooperatives to partner with schools, potentially offering milk as a form of payment for school fees or introducing other mechanisms to facilitate education for children of dairy farmers. The move is expected to help many farmers who face the difficult choice of either paying school fees or investing in their dairy business.
Chairman Paul Tiret of Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative expressed his support for the initiative, calling it a timely and much-needed intervention. "This partnership will make a huge difference for many of our farmers. Education is a key pillar of our future, and this program ensures that our children stay in school while we continue to contribute to the economy through our dairy farming," Tiret said.
Space AI, a technology firm involved in the project, will provide support in monitoring the program's implementation, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the transactions between farmers, cooperatives, and schools.
Governor Bii concluded by emphasizing the importance of supporting Uasin Gishu's dairy farmers, who play a vital role in the region's agricultural sector. He reassured the public that the program is on track for rollout in the coming months, with plans to expand it across the county and potentially to other regions if successful.
"We are committed to finding solutions that benefit both our agricultural sector and our children’s education," Governor Bii said. "This initiative will make Uasin Gishu a model county in balancing economic growth with educational development."
The program, once fully rolled out, is expected to provide relief to thousands of farmers, helping to ensure that both their livelihoods and their children's education thrive.
