Governor Bii Highlights the Impact of Cooperatives on Local Dairy Industry and Education

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has lauded the cooperative movement for its vital role in boosting the region’s economic growth, particularly in the dairy sector. In a statement following a visit by the Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, Governor Bii emphasized the transformative impact of partnerships with over 300 farmer cooperatives in the region.

"Through our collaboration with more than 300 farmer cooperatives, we have significantly increased milk production in Uasin Gishu," Governor Bii said. "This effort has not only strengthened our local economy but also contributed to the well-being of our children, with over 40,000 ECDE pupils receiving free milk twice a week, greatly enhancing their nutrition."

The Governor’s remarks came after he hosted Hon. Oparanya, who was visiting Uasin Gishu ahead of his tour to meet with dairy farmers in Cheptiret/Kipchamo Ward. The visit was part of a wider government initiative to support the dairy sector and empower local farmers.

"We commend the government for its continued support, which has enabled our farmers to sell their milk at Ksh 50 per litre," Governor Bii added. "This initiative is empowering local farmers, strengthening the dairy sector, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for many families in our region."

Also present during the visit was Cooperatives Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi, who joined the discussion on how cooperatives can continue to support the growth of small-scale farmers and micro-enterprises in Uasin Gishu.

Governor Bii expressed his gratitude to the government for its commitment to the cooperative sector, noting that it has played a crucial role in the region’s economic development. He reaffirmed the county’s commitment to working closely with cooperatives to continue supporting local farmers and fostering economic growth through agricultural initiatives.

The partnership between the government, cooperatives, and farmers in Uasin Gishu is seen as a model for rural development, promoting food security, sustainable agriculture, and improved livelihoods for farmers and their families. Governor Bii concluded by reiterating his administration’s dedication to strengthening the dairy industry and expanding access to essential services for communities in the region.
