Human Rights Activist Kipkorir Ngetich Condemns Attack on Security Officers by Maasai Morans at Suswa

Renowned human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has strongly condemned the recent attack on security officers by Maasai morans at Suswa in Narok County, calling the actions "unacceptable" and urging immediate legal action against all those involved.

The incident, which occurred after a road accident in which several animals were killed, saw a group of Maasai morans ambushing and physically assaulting police officers. Ngetich expressed sympathy for the loss the community suffered due to the accident but emphasized that violence against law enforcement officers was unjustifiable.

"The attack on security officers is a dangerous and unacceptable behavior. While it is understandable that the community was distressed over the loss of livestock, violence against motorist and security officers cannot be tolerated," said Ngetich in a statement issued earlier today. "Those responsible must be arrested without delay and taken to court to face justice."

Ngetich also pointed to the broader issue of the negative role social media has played in inciting anti-security sentiments among civilians. He noted that false narratives and inflammatory comments circulating on platforms have contributed to increasing hostility toward law enforcement. He called on the government to take strong action against those using media to undermine the efforts of the police.

"We must also address the dangerous weaponry culture within certain communities, such as the Maasai, where carrying dangerous weapons is normalized," Ngetich continued. "It is time to disband groups that promote such violence and to provide adequate security measures to ensure public safety."

The activist also expressed concern over the potential rise of vigilante groups, fueled by the actions of the attackers, and warned that such groups could be manipulated for political gain in the upcoming 2027 elections. He urged the Inspector General of Police to order an immediate operation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

"An attack on security officers emboldens the youth and encourages dangerous behavior that could spiral out of control," Ngetich cautioned. "We must ensure that no one is above the law, and anyone who attacks a police officer or any security personnel should face the full force of the law."

Ngetich also condemned recent remarks made by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, which he described as reckless and potentially destabilizing for the nation. According to the human rights advocate, such statements only fuel tensions and further divide the public, weakening national unity.

"We urge the government to address the misuse of social media and the rhetoric that is undermining the work of our security forces," Ngetich stated. "We cannot afford to let the rule of law be compromised, and we must stand firm in defending the integrity and safety of our officers."

In conclusion, Ngetich emphasized the need for a swift and firm response from the government to restore order and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. He also applauded the restraint shown by the officers involved in the attack but called for stronger measures to prevent the growing trend of lawlessness.

"We stand with our police officers, and the government must take decisive action to protect them and ensure that those who engage in violent and unlawful acts are held accountable," Ngetich urged.
