The Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) has welcomed 20 staff members redeployed from the recently dissolved Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA). The redeployment follows a directive by Hon. Aden Duale, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, as part of the government’s efforts to streamline operations within the sector.
Speaking during the welcome ceremony, KEFRI Director Dr. Jane Njuguna highlighted the significance of the new team in advancing the institute’s objectives. “The integration of these skilled professionals is a critical step in supporting KEFRI’s mission to deliver quality seeds and contribute to the national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032,” she stated.
The redeployed staff will bolster KEFRI’s capacity in areas such as research, seed production, and forest conservation, aligning with the government's commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to optimize resources and improve coordination in environmental conservation efforts.
The 15-billion tree program is a flagship project aimed at combating climate change, restoring degraded ecosystems, and achieving Kenya’s reforestation targets. KEFRI plays a pivotal role in this program by providing high-quality tree seeds, conducting research, and offering technical expertise to ensure successful implementation.
Dr. Njuguna expressed confidence in the ability of the redeployed staff to make meaningful contributions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving Kenya’s environmental goals.
This move underscores the government’s resolve to enhance institutional efficiency and effectiveness in tackling environmental challenges while laying a strong foundation for sustainable development.
