The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks by Pastor Ng’ang’a, in which he allegedly trivialized rape and demeaned women. In a statement released on January 20, 2025, KEWOPA called the comments harmful, insensitive, and detrimental to the ongoing fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in Kenya.
“At a time when gender-based violence is on the rise, such remarks undermine the dignity and respect of survivors while perpetuating harmful stereotypes that normalize violence,” said KEWOPA Chairperson Hon. Leah Sankaire.
The association highlighted that rape is not a subject for humor or mockery but a grievous crime that leaves survivors with lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical scars. KEWOPA expressed concern that such reckless remarks diminish the pain and suffering of survivors while failing to address the urgent need for action against GBV.
Hon. Sankaire underscored the critical role leaders, particularly those in religious spaces, play in shaping societal attitudes. She urged leaders to use their platforms to promote empathy, understanding, and respect, rather than inflict harm or demean others.
“Faith-based institutions and their leaders must lead by example. They should champion messages of love, respect, and protection, especially for the vulnerable in our society. Words matter, and public figures must use theirs to inspire positive societal change,” KEWOPA stated.
KEWOPA called on Pastor Ng’ang’a to issue an unreserved apology to survivors of sexual violence and women across Kenya. They also urged communities, organizations, and leaders to work together in addressing GBV through awareness campaigns, support for survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable.
“Let us remember that our words and actions have the power to either build or break our society. Together, we can create a safer and more respectful Kenya for everyone,” the statement concluded.
Gender-based violence has reached alarming levels in Kenya, with cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse increasing steadily. KEWOPA has been at the forefront of advocating for survivors, pushing for stricter laws, and fostering community awareness to combat this crisis.
As the nation grapples with this challenge, KEWOPA’s firm stance serves as a reminder that every leader has a role to play in shaping a just and equitable society.
