The Kenyan legal community is mourning the untimely passing of Judy, a distinguished family law advocate and former Head of Litigation at the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). Judy’s contributions to family law, particularly in advocating for the rights of women and children, left an indelible mark on Kenya’s legal landscape.
Judy’s journey in law began as a rising star in FIDA, where she quickly became known for her sharp legal mind, her dedication to justice, and her compassionate approach to family law cases. As the Head of Litigation, she worked tirelessly on high-profile cases, fighting for the protection of women and children’s rights in a country where many often struggle to access justice.
During her time at FIDA, Judy became an invaluable mentor to many young lawyers, including Millie Odhiambo, Member of Parliament for Suba, who worked under Judy in the Litigation Department. “Judy was my immediate boss when I was employed at FIDA. Her leadership was unmatched, and her expertise in family law was extraordinary,” said Odhiambo. “She was my first point of call on family law matters, and I often referred clients to her because I knew they would receive the best legal advice possible.”
Judy’s rise to becoming one of the leading family lawyers in Kenya was not only due to her exceptional legal skills but also her unwavering commitment to advancing the rights of marginalized groups. She was known for taking on difficult cases and ensuring that justice was served for women and children who had suffered at the hands of systemic injustices.
Even after leaving FIDA to pursue a new path with the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Odhiambo continued to seek Judy’s guidance and referred clients to her for legal assistance. “Her impact on me, and on so many others, cannot be overstated. Judy’s legacy will continue to inspire all of us who have been fortunate enough to know her.”
The loss of Judy is felt deeply not only within the legal community but also among the clients whose lives she changed with her tireless advocacy and legal expertise. Her work has left a lasting impact on Kenya’s approach to family law, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of lawyers dedicated to the pursuit of justice and equality.
As the legal profession and the nation at large mourn the passing of a trailblazer, we remember Judy’s unwavering commitment to justice and her profound impact on the lives of many Kenyans. Her legacy in family law will endure, and her contributions will be celebrated for years to come.
