Harrison Kariuki Bundi, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) representing Persons with Disabilities in Kirinyaga County, expressed deep gratitude and joy today as he helped a young boy from Kīangŭrwe who had been unable to walk and could only crawl on his hands and buttocks. The MCA facilitated the donation of a wheelchair, an assistive device that will greatly improve the boy’s mobility and quality of life.
In a heartfelt message, MCA Kariuki Bundi noted that the Full and Effective Participation of People with Disabilities (PwD) in society is a core principle of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). He highlighted that providing essential assistive devices such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, and canes is one of the most effective ways to support the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life.
"I am at peace and full of joy today to be able to help this young boy in Kīangŭrwe, who could only crawl on his hands and buttocks," said MCA Kariuki Bundi. "This is a reminder of the power of community and the importance of ensuring that no one is left behind. Thanks to my good friend Nyaga for bringing this case to my attention, we’ve been able to make a positive difference in this child’s life."
The donation of the wheelchair was a result of a collaborative effort between MCA Kariuki Bundi, local community leaders, and Nyaga, a well-wisher who identified the boy’s need. The MCA stressed that such initiatives are vital in empowering individuals with disabilities to participate fully in society and to lead independent lives.
