Noah Midamba being sworn in as Council Chairman |
By Wasike Elvis
Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba has inaugurated a new council for Moi University, with a renewed focus on restoring the institution’s lost academic prestige. Ogamba, addressing a gathering during the inauguration, emphasized that the government’s decision to dissolve the old council was a necessary step to address the long-standing governance and management issues that had caused instability at the university.
“The university has been facing severe challenges due to poor governance, and this new council is part of the government’s deliberate move to restore its lost glory as an academic giant,” Ogamba stated. He added that the institution had suffered a decline in reputation and academic performance, which he attributed to lapses in leadership.
The newly appointed council, led by Chairman Noah Midamba, is set to guide the university back on track. Other new members include Ronald Wasike, Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Edward Sambili, and Ann Waceke Makori. Ogamba took a moment to thank the outgoing council for their contributions, but made it clear that the government's commitment to restoring the university’s status meant that it would no longer tolerate lapses in management.
"We will no longer allow laxity in the management of our public universities. The government is prepared to make difficult decisions if they are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of these institutions," Ogamba added.
Higher Education Principal Secretary, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, also spoke during the ceremony, assuring university staff of the full implementation of the return-to-work formula. This follows prolonged strikes and disruptions that negatively affected learning activities last year. Inyangala expressed optimism that with the new council in place, Moi University would once again become a beacon of academic excellence, research, and innovation.
The PS stressed the importance of working towards the repositioning of Moi University as a leading center for higher education in the region. She acknowledged that students had endured significant hardships due to the disruptions but reassured them that measures were being put in place to restore normalcy.
Area Member of Parliament (MP) CPA Julius Ruto also expressed his confidence in the new council, noting that it was well positioned to address the challenges facing the university and implement transformative policies. “The new council is well positioned to address challenges and implement transformative policies to restore Moi University’s position as a hub of academic excellence and innovation. Their leadership will be key in ensuring the institution continues to serve as a pillar of education and development in our region,” said Ruto.
As the area MP, Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the university’s leadership and other stakeholders to support initiatives that benefit students, staff, and the broader community. “Together, we will ensure Moi University remains a beacon of progress and opportunity,” he added.
The fresh leadership at Moi University is expected to bring renewed energy and direction to an institution that has long been a key pillar in Kenya's higher education landscape. Both Ogamba and Inyangala emphasized the need for strict government oversight to ensure that the challenges of governance are swiftly addressed, and that the quality of education in public universities is upheld.
