Moi University Staff Resumes Industrial Action Over Unmet Agreements

In a decision that underscores the deepening frustrations among university staff, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Moi University Chapter has announced the immediate resumption of industrial action, a move that will see all staff withdraw their services to the university.

This development comes after a meeting held by all members of staff at Moi University, where it was collectively agreed that the industrial action, which initially began in August 2024, should be resumed. The decision follows the employer’s failure to adhere to the "Return to Work Formula" that was signed by both parties but has not been honored.

The "Return to Work Formula" was meant to guide the resolution of disputes between the university management and its staff, ensuring fair treatment and the fulfillment of agreed-upon terms. Unfortunately, the continued disregard for these terms has left staff with no option but to escalate their actions.

"We regret that it has come to this point," said Dr. Richard Okero, the Chapter Chairperson. "However, our patience has worn thin, and the failure to meet the agreements is a clear demonstration of the employer’s unwillingness to resolve the issues at hand. The industrial action is being resumed with immediate effect, and all staff are being called to withdraw their services until further notice from the Union."

Dr. Okero further emphasized that the action is not a decision taken lightly but is a direct result of the university administration’s failure to engage meaningfully with the union and fulfill its commitments. The union's leadership has called on all staff to stay away from their workstations as a sign of solidarity and commitment to the cause.

The union also urged the university management to honor the agreements in good faith, with hopes of resolving the matter quickly and returning to normal operations. However, until that happens, the staff remain firm in their position.

As the situation unfolds, the public and students are urged to stay informed on any developments, as the industrial action could affect academic activities and services at the university.
