NEMA to Celebrate World Wetlands Day at Ondiri Wetland, Kiambu County

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), under the leadership of Director General Mamo B. Mamo, has emphasized the vital role wetlands play in sustaining life. Wetlands serve as habitats for numerous endangered and endemic species, while also providing essential benefits such as clean water, food, and natural disaster mitigation.

"Life thrives in wetlands, and human life depends on them," noted Mamo B. Mamo. Wetlands act as natural buffers, reducing the impact of floods, droughts, and storm surges, making their conservation critical for ecological balance and human survival.

This year’s national celebrations for World Wetlands Day will take place at Ondiri Wetland in Kiambu County on 2nd February 2025. Preceding the event will be the Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run on 1st February 2025, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting these vital ecosystems.

NEMA calls on citizens, conservation groups, and stakeholders to actively participate in these events and contribute to safeguarding wetlands, which are indispensable for biodiversity and human well-being.
