NLC CEO Kabale Tache Arero Highlights Progress in Community Land Registration at Consultative Meeting

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Land Commission (NLC), CHRP Kabale Tache Arero, attended a Consultative Breakfast Meeting this morning aimed at expediting the registration of community land in Kenya. The event, organized by the NLC in collaboration with Namati Kenya, focused on addressing challenges in the registration process and protecting the rights of communities across the country.

In her remarks, Arero emphasized the shared commitment of all stakeholders to meeting the needs of local communities. She announced the NLC’s latest advisory, which seeks to accelerate the registration of community land, a critical step in safeguarding land rights. The advisory builds on research about the transition of group ranches to community land, examining the current registration status, existing challenges, and the need for greater inclusivity in the process.

“The National Land Commission is pleased to present this advisory, aimed at improving community land registration. It draws from extensive consultations with community members, Community Land Management Committees (CLMC), and other stakeholders, as well as policy recommendations designed to enhance the process,” Arero stated.

The CEO also expressed her gratitude towards Namati Kenya for their ongoing support and collaboration, and thanked the CLMCs, community members, and all other contributors for their invaluable input in shaping the advisory.

The consultative meeting, which brought together key stakeholders, was graced by Hon. Alice Wahome, the Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, who served as the chief guest. Other notable attendees included H.E. FCPA Ahmed Abdullahi, Chair of the Council of Governors, Gershom Otachi, Chairperson of the NLC, and Hon. Esther Murugi, NLC Commissioner responsible for Land Use Planning, Research, and Counties Committee.

The meeting underscored the importance of continued collaboration between government bodies, local communities, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful registration and governance of community land in Kenya. The discussions also reinforced the urgency of addressing the challenges and barriers that have slowed the registration process, with the aim of fostering inclusivity and protecting the land rights of communities across the country.
