President William Ruto Calls for Immediate Ceasefire and Peace Talks in the DRC

In light of the worsening security situation and escalating humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President William Ruto has called for the immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities between the warring parties. Speaking today as Chair of the East African Community (EAC), President Ruto condemned the ongoing violence and the closure of airspace in Goma, which has significantly hindered humanitarian aid efforts.

"The escalating deterioration of peace and security in the DRC is of grave concern to all of us," President Ruto stated. "The ongoing military actions are exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis, and it is imperative that all parties put an end to hostilities to allow for the delivery of critical humanitarian assistance."

Ruto called on both sides of the conflict to engage in peaceful dialogue and prioritize negotiations to resolve the crisis. "I urge both sides to pursue peaceful means to address this tragic conflict and ensure the safety and well-being of all affected civilians," he said.

President Ruto also revealed that he had spoken to President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda earlier in the day, urging them to listen to the calls for peace coming from the people of the region and the international community.

As part of efforts to find a lasting solution, President Ruto announced that the EAC, following consultations with Heads of State from Member States, will convene an Extraordinary Summit within the next 48 hours. The summit aims to determine a clear course of action to restore peace and stability to the region.

"The EAC stands ready to collaborate closely with the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the broader international community to facilitate dialogue and promote a peaceful resolution to this conflict," President Ruto affirmed.

He reiterated the EAC's commitment to working towards a peaceful and prosperous future for the region, where all parties prioritize peace, security, and the welfare of their citizens.

As the region grapples with the ongoing crisis, President Ruto's call for peace underscores the urgent need for diplomacy and cooperation to end the violence and address the humanitarian needs of those most affected by the conflict.
