Hon. Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, visited the Manyani Law Enforcement Academy, reflecting on the vital importance of biodiversity. She described it as humanity's lifeline, quoting Johan Rockström: “Destroying biodiversity is like setting fire to our lifeboat.”
Miano praised the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for its critical role in protecting Kenya’s natural heritage, balancing conservation with community welfare and sustainable development. She commended wardens and rangers for their dedication, emphasizing that their efforts are the backbone of resilient ecosystems and stable societies.
During her visit, she met newly recruited rangers and senior staff from regions across the country, encouraging them to embrace their responsibilities with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose. She reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to providing KWS with resources, training, and equipment to enhance operational efficiency. Miano also urged KWS to uphold the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and accountability while fostering innovation in conservation practices.
She highlighted the importance of leveraging technology and strengthening community partnerships as key strategies in addressing conservation challenges. Additionally, she called for performance-based management systems to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation at all levels.
Hon. Miano concluded her visit by reaffirming the Ministry’s unwavering support for KWS, emphasizing that protecting biodiversity is a duty owed to future generations. Her engagement at Manyani underscores her dedication to empowering KWS and safeguarding Kenya’s unique wildlife heritage.
