REREC and Uasin Gishu County Launch Electrification Projects in Rural Villages

By Wasike Elvis

In a significant step towards enhancing rural electrification, the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) and the County Government of Uasin Gishu officially flagged off materials for electrification projects in several villages in Uasin Gishu County. The event, which took place today, marks a milestone in providing sustainable energy solutions to remote areas.

The electrification initiative will cover Siliboi/Saito Village, Lelmokwo Village, Kabiyet Village, Mobet Village, and Kap Chemaget Village. The flag-off ceremony was led by H.E. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Governor of Uasin Gishu County, and Eng. Jonah Kosgei, the North Rift Regional Manager of REREC, who both underscored the importance of rural electrification in driving socio-economic development.

Governor Chelilim expressed his optimism about the project, noting that the introduction of reliable electricity to these areas will not only improve the quality of life for residents but also support local businesses, enhance education through improved learning environments, and facilitate access to healthcare services. “This is a game-changer for our communities, enabling them to participate more fully in the country’s development,” said Governor Chelilim.

The electrification initiative is part of REREC's Matching Fund Program, which focuses on fostering collaboration between national and county governments, as well as local communities, to support infrastructure projects in underserved areas. Through this partnership, REREC is ensuring that rural communities, which have long lacked access to stable electricity, can benefit from the economic and social advantages that energy access brings.

Eng. Kosgei highlighted that the program was a demonstration of the government's commitment to reducing energy inequality across the country, stating, “Together, we are lighting up lives and empowering these communities to build a brighter future.”

The projects are expected to improve not just living standards but also offer new economic opportunities, particularly in agriculture and small-scale enterprises, which are vital for the growth of rural economies.

As the materials are distributed to these villages, the collaboration between REREC and the Uasin Gishu County Government is poised to make a lasting impact, promoting the transition towards a more sustainable and inclusive energy future.

This project reflects the growing importance of partnerships in advancing Kenya’s development goals, ensuring that no community is left behind in the country’s journey toward greater energy access and economic progress.
