Rigathi Gachagua Condemns Murder of Richard Raymond Otieno, Calls for Justice

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the brutal murder of Richard Raymond Otieno, a prominent human rights defender from Molo, describing the incident as a reflection of the rising political intolerance and repression in the country.

In a statement released over the weekend, Gachagua expressed deep sorrow and shared his condolences with the family of Otieno, known widely as "Molo President," as well as the residents of Molo. Otieno, who was an advocate for human rights and a vocal critic of government policies, was murdered under circumstances that Gachagua deems to be part of a larger, alarming trend aimed at silencing government critics.

“The gruesome and brutal murder of Richard Raymond Otieno is a tragic reminder of how political intolerance and repression are taking root in Kenya," Gachagua stated. "This is not just the death of one man; it is a chilling message to anyone who dares to challenge the government. This archaic strategy of silencing dissent, following failed abductions, is a step further into a political darkness that we cannot ignore."

The former deputy president expressed concern over the growing climate of fear in the country, pointing out the hardships faced by ordinary citizens, particularly women and children, who he said were now trapped in an increasingly volatile environment.

“How can a great nation like Kenya slip into the trenches of a failed state, where its citizens live in constant fear for their lives?” Gachagua questioned. “We cannot allow this kind of violence and oppression to continue unchecked.”

As the country mourns the loss of a promising young man who was deeply committed to social justice, Gachagua has called on the government to act swiftly and decisively to bring those responsible for Otieno’s murder to justice. He urged the authorities to ensure that the case is not left unresolved, stressing that it is crucial for the credibility of the government and for the safety of all Kenyans.

“His killers must be brought to book, no matter the cost. The Government of Kenya cannot afford to sit on the fence on this matter,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua concluded his message with heartfelt condolences to Otieno’s family and the people of Molo, praying that they would find comfort and strength in this difficult time. He also offered prayers for the soul of Otieno, hoping that it would rest in eternal peace.

“We stand with the family of Raymond Otieno and the people of Molo in this painful moment,” Gachagua added. "May God rest his soul in eternal peace and bring comfort to his family and community."
