Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale has condemned an alarming incident at Bukhungu Stadium today, where Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Nabii Nabwera allegedly slapped a Personal Assistant (PA) to Kakamega County Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya.
The shocking altercation took place during President William Ruto's visit to inspect the stalled renovation project at the stadium, which is intended to boost sports infrastructure in the region. The President had been addressing the contractor responsible for the delays, which have sparked concern among local leaders and the public. However, tensions escalated when the MP, who had been involved in discussions surrounding the project, reportedly confronted the Governor's PA.
Senator Khalwale, who was present at the scene, expressed his shock and disappointment at the physical altercation. In a statement released shortly after the incident, he said, "It is deeply regrettable that such an unacceptable act of violence took place today. This is not only a disrespect to the office of the Governor but also an embarrassment to the people of Kakamega. Political disagreements must never escalate to violence."
Senator Khalwale added that while political differences are common, leaders must conduct themselves with dignity and respect for one another. He called for an immediate investigation into the incident and said that it was important for such matters to be addressed swiftly to maintain the integrity of leadership in the region.
“MP Nabii Nabwera’s actions today were both unwarranted and unnecessary. This kind of behavior has no place in our politics, and I believe that our leaders should always set an example of professionalism, especially in the presence of national leaders like President Ruto,” Khalwale stated.
Sources at the scene indicated that the altercation occurred during a tense moment as the President questioned the contractor about the slow pace of renovations at the stadium. The reasons for the confrontation between the MP and the Governor's PA remain unclear, but the incident quickly attracted attention from those present.
Senator Khalwale urged all leaders in the region to work together to ensure that the focus remains on the critical issues at hand, such as the timely completion of the Bukhungu Stadium renovation. He also emphasized that such incidents must not derail the progress and unity of Kakamega County.
The Senator concluded by calling for unity among leaders and the public, adding, "Let us focus on what matters most—ensuring that Kakamega County gets the best out of this important project. Personal conflicts and violence should never overshadow our collective goal of development."
As of now, there has been no official statement from MP Nabii Nabwera regarding the incident, but calls for an immediate investigation are growing. The community awaits further updates on how this matter will be handled.
