The Social Protection Committee, chaired by Vice-Chairperson Hon. Hilary Kosgei (Kipkelion West), convened a crucial meeting with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) to discuss pressing issues surrounding government support for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
One of the key topics of the meeting was the current funding model, which allocates financial support based on family units rather than individuals. Lawmakers expressed concern that this approach unfairly disadvantages households with multiple members living with disabilities, as they receive the same amount of assistance as families with only one beneficiary.
In a bid to rectify this, legislators emphasized the need for a shift toward an individualized support model, where funding is provided on a per-person basis, ensuring equitable distribution of resources for each person with a disability.
The meeting was attended by outgoing CEO of NCPWD, Harun Hassan, who lauded the committee’s proactive role in spearheading policy reforms that aim to improve the lives of PWDs. Acting CEO Ms. Eva Njoroge also participated, reaffirming the Council’s dedication to improving the effectiveness and reach of its initiatives.
Members of the committee reiterated their commitment to strengthening the operations of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and advancing the well-being of PWDs nationwide. The proposed changes reflect a growing consensus to ensure that individuals with disabilities receive fair and sufficient support to lead productive and fulfilling lives.
