State of the Business Environment and Employers' Priorities for 2025

By John Kariuki

In a landmark address, the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) released a statement on January 24, 2025, outlining the current state of Kenya’s business environment and the priorities for employers in the coming year. The statement emphasized key challenges businesses are facing while proposing solutions to foster a resilient and competitive economic environment.

The FKE highlighted various hurdles that continue to impact businesses across the country. Chief among these are rising operational costs, fluctuating market dynamics, and regulatory challenges that make it difficult for enterprises to thrive. Employers voiced concerns over economic uncertainties that have led to reduced investment and slower job creation.

Further, the persistent issue of high inflation has strained household purchasing power, affecting consumer demand. The business community has also expressed worry over gaps in infrastructure, particularly in energy and transport, which have hindered efficient operations and increased costs.

FKE’s statement stressed the urgent need for collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and other stakeholders to address these challenges. Employers are advocating for policy reforms to simplify regulations and make it easier for businesses to operate, particularly for small and medium enterprises. They are also calling for measures to reduce inflation, stabilize the Kenyan shilling, and attract foreign direct investment. Investments in energy, transport, and digital infrastructure were also highlighted as critical to supporting business growth.

In addition, employers emphasized the importance of strengthening technical and vocational training programs to equip the workforce with skills that match industry needs. They also called for enhanced social dialogue to improve communication and cooperation among employers, employees, and the government in addressing workplace issues effectively.

Looking ahead, the FKE identified key areas where efforts will be concentrated to drive economic growth and create a favorable environment for businesses. Job creation remains a top priority, with a focus on leveraging technology and innovation to boost productivity. Employers also aim to champion sustainable practices to align with global environmental standards and build resilience in the face of climate change.

As the year unfolds, the FKE remains committed to its role as a bridge between employers, the government, and employees, ensuring that the business environment is conducive to sustainable economic growth and prosperity.
