A suspected motorcycle thief met a brutal end on Tuesday morning when he was allegedly caught attempting to steal a motorbike in Eldoret’s Central Business District (CBD) near the "Screen ya Mandago" area. The mob, angered by the theft attempt, set the man on fire, resulting in his death.
Uasin Gishu County Commander, Benjamin Mwanthi, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He urged the public not to take the law into their own hands. "I want to confirm that one person was burnt to death. It is alleged that he is a motorcycle thief who tried to steal a motorbike. This incident is unfortunate, and we call upon residents not to take the law into their hands," Mwanthi said.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over motorcycle thefts in the region. Last year, police in Uasin Gishu County successfully recovered 59 stolen motorcycles, 35 engines, and other assorted spare parts. Additionally, four suspects were arrested in connection with the thefts.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s brutal incident. While they condemn the act of vigilantism, police are urging residents to report criminal activities through proper channels to ensure justice is served.
The case has drawn mixed reactions from the community, with some residents expressing frustration over the rise in motorcycle thefts, while others have condemned the mob justice as unlawful and dangerous. As investigations continue, local law enforcement officials are working to reassure the public and maintain order in the area.
