In a powerful display of compassion and community unity, a teacher’s heartfelt desire to provide meals for vulnerable children has blossomed into a thriving initiative, now supporting nearly 40 students. What started as a small, personal dream has turned into a life-changing project, thanks to the generosity of the community.
The journey began in 2023 when Shokwei V. Barsulai, an award-winning teacher, witnessed the struggles of a group of children in her school who were going without meals. Deeply moved, she shared the challenges with a few close friends, and with the help of Philaris Chebii and other supporters, they raised funds to purchase maize, beans, and other food essentials for eight children.
“I remember how heavy my heart felt,” said Barsulai. “It was a burden I couldn’t ignore. I knew that we had to do something, but I wasn’t sure how. That’s when my friends stepped in, and we made the first step toward something bigger.”
Thanks to the community’s generosity, the program quickly gained momentum. In 2024, more people, including Hannah van de Veen, joined the cause, contributing both time and resources to expand the feeding program.
In 2025, just three weeks into the new school year, the program has expanded to feed nearly 40 children, a testament to the power of community support. Recently, a group of donors provided additional maize, beans, and essential school supplies, ensuring that the program can continue to grow and reach even more children in need.
“Every step of this journey has been a reminder that we are stronger together,” Barsulai said, visibly moved by the overwhelming support. “What began as a single spark of hope has turned into a flame that is touching many lives. This isn’t just about food – it’s about restoring dignity, offering hope, and showing our children that we believe in their futures.”
The program’s success is not just a result of financial donations but of the dedicated individuals who have worked tirelessly to keep it running, including Madam Viola Lagat, Madam Immaculate, and Mr. Kelvin. Their contributions, along with those of other community members, have been crucial in ensuring the program’s sustainability.
Looking forward, Barsulai remains hopeful that the program will continue to grow, with the ultimate goal of providing every child with a nutritious lunch of githeri and uji, key staples in the local diet.
“One step at a time,” Barsulai said with determination. “We may not have all the answers, but together, we are making a difference in the lives of these children, and that’s what matters most.”
As the program continues to expand, Barsulai’s words echo in the hearts of those who support it: “Pamoja twalinde watoto” – together, let’s protect the children.
