The County Government of Uasin Gishu has intensified its efforts to ensure reliable access to essential medicines in local health facilities through strengthened collaboration with the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).
In a meeting held between the Department of Health Services, the Department of Finance, and KEMSA representatives, stakeholders underscored the importance of streamlining the distribution of medical supplies to improve healthcare delivery.
The meeting, chaired by Health Services County Executive Dr. Abraham Serem and Finance County Executive Mr. Micah Rogony, focused on optimizing the supply chain to maximize the impact of the county’s Social Health Authority (SHA) initiative. This program aligns with Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim’s vision to ensure the availability of critical medicines for all residents.
Addressing Gaps in Drug Supply
Dr. Serem commended the progress made under the initiative while acknowledging the challenges that remain.
“Governor Bii’s initiative to ensure the availability of essential drugs is commendable. However, consistency in supply is critical, and we must work collaboratively to achieve this. While many vital drugs are accessible, some remain scarce due to licensing requirements, specialized storage needs, and classification as controlled substances,” said Dr. Serem.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
Finance County Executive Mr. Rogony emphasized the importance of collaboration between the health and finance departments and KEMSA in overcoming supply chain hurdles.
“Regular engagements foster transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the supply chain, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for our residents. We are committed to ensuring that all health facilities in the county are well-stocked to provide the highest standard of care,” he stated.
Commitment to Preventive and Promotive Health
Chief Officer for Promotive and Preventive Health, Dr. Paul Wangwe, reiterated the county’s dedication to prioritizing the health and well-being of its residents. He highlighted the importance of regular stakeholder engagements in building a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the evolving needs of the population.
“These meetings are crucial in ensuring our healthcare system remains adaptive and responsive to the community’s needs. We are fully committed to addressing gaps and ensuring residents have access to quality healthcare services,” Dr. Wangwe added.
Resolution for Sustained Progress
The stakeholders resolved to hold regular follow-up meetings to maintain the momentum and monitor progress in drug supply and distribution. The collective commitment aims to equip health facilities effectively and ensure timely access to essential medicines for the community.
This initiative represents a significant step toward building a robust healthcare delivery system in Uasin Gishu County, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to improving health outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
