87% of Family Group Foundation Scholarship Beneficiaries Transition to Tertiary Education

The Family Group Foundation’s Tufuzu Na Elimu scholarship program has achieved a remarkable 87% transition rate, with 100 beneficiaries attaining the minimum grade of C+ and above required to join tertiary education institutions. This milestone was celebrated during an award ceremony for the program's top performers.

Dr. Beatrice Muganda, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Higher Education and Research, praised the Foundation’s contributions to Kenya's educational landscape, particularly in supporting the government's goal of 100% transition to high school education. "The true power of education lies in breaking barriers, unlocking opportunities, and transforming generations," Dr. Muganda said. She highlighted the challenges posed by increasing enrolment and limited resources in higher education but affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring no deserving student misses out on their opportunities.

Among the 114 beneficiaries who sat for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, four students achieved an outstanding mean grade of A, twelve earned A-, and 84 students secured grades ranging from B+ to C+. This academic achievement marks a significant success for the scholarship program and its holistic approach to nurturing young talent.

The Foundation's efforts also received acknowledgment from the Military Wives Association of Kenya. Chair Grace Kahariri expressed gratitude for the program’s support, noting that 25 children from military families have benefitted from the scholarship. She emphasized the importance of the partnership between the Family Group Foundation and the Military Wives Association in providing educational opportunities for military children.

Family Bank’s Chief Operations Officer, Belinda Maghanga, reaffirmed the Bank’s continued support for the scholarship program, which has been running for 12 years. "Through the Family Group Foundation, we have spent over KES 300 million, supporting more than 1,200 students with access to quality education and mentorship," Maghanga said. She expressed excitement about seeing the impact these students will have in their communities and beyond as they advance in their educational journeys.

The Tufuzu Na Elimu scholarship program offers more than just financial aid—it also focuses on emotional and psychological support. Dr. Francis Muraya, Chairman of the Family Group Foundation, emphasized the program’s commitment to holistic development, stating, "We are not just invested in their academic performance but also in their personal growth. Our mentorship program helps students navigate challenges, equipping them with emotional intelligence and life skills."

The program’s mentorship curriculum has currently reached over 890 students in 341 schools across the country, providing guidance on academic, career, and life skills. In addition to their ongoing support, the students recently completed an alumni mentorship program, which provided critical information on higher education options, funding opportunities, and career pathways.

The success of the Tufuzu Na Elimu scholarship program serves as a testament to the power of collaboration between institutions, communities, and the private sector in shaping the future of Kenya’s youth. As these students move on to tertiary education, their achievements underscore the potential for transformative change when young minds are given the tools and support they need to succeed.
