A group of determined elderly women from Uasin Gishu County are making history as they gear up for an international football tournament in South Africa, scheduled for April. The Mutei Grannies Football Club, comprised of women aged between 50 and 70, is set on breaking barriers and proving that age is no obstacle to athletic achievement.

Hailing from Kamaua sub-location in Tembelio Ward, the team is pushing aside concerns over aging muscles and tendons, showing a remarkable commitment to the sport. Their determination was on full display during a friendly match against Millenium Ladies, composed of their daughters and granddaughters. Although the grannies held their own for nearly the entire game, they were narrowly defeated 1-0 in the final moments.

Despite the loss, the match was a testament to the grannies' resilience and endurance, as they played for an impressive 93 minutes. Witnessing the action were County Executive for Sports, Eng. Lucy Ng'endo, and her Assistant Director of Sports, Viola Korir, who praised the team's energy and spirit.

The excitement doesn't stop there. On Thursday, the grannies will be hosted by Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, who will flag off the team for an upcoming television appearance in Nairobi. The Mutei Grannies are not only challenging age stereotypes but also proving that it's never too late to chase your dreams—on and off the football field.

The team’s journey to South Africa has sparked local pride, and their story is one of determination, passion, and breaking the age barrier in sports. All eyes will be on the Mutei Grannies as they prepare for their international debut later this year.
