As global debates continue to swirl over former President Donald Trump’s decision to close the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), one pressing question emerges: Should Africa take a similar approach by reducing its reliance on external support for development initiatives? This question has prompted a deeper reflection on the continent’s path forward.
Kevin Okwara, a renowned entrepreneur coach, believes that Africa is at a critical juncture where it must start investing in indigenous solutions to foster growth and development, rather than continuing to depend on foreign aid, whether from government agencies or religious organizations. In his view, the time has come for African nations to chart their own course toward true emancipation.

While some supporters of Trump’s USAID decision argue that African countries should reduce their dependence on Western assistance, Okwara highlights that this principle should also apply to religious organizations that have long relied on Western funding. He believes that relying on external support often leads to African nations being shaped by foreign agendas, leaving their own potential underutilized.
“Africa’s spiritual and cultural traditions are rich with wisdom, and they hold the key to addressing many of the continent’s most pressing challenges. By investing in these indigenous practices, we can create solutions that are not only sustainable but deeply connected to our communities,” Okwara explained.
Okwara calls for a shift in mindset, urging African governments, religious groups, and entrepreneurs to look inward for solutions. He envisions a future where Africa’s political frameworks, business models, and religious practices reflect the continent’s unique needs and aspirations, not external pressures or funding.
The entrepreneur coach also emphasizes the importance of nurturing homegrown businesses and leaders who can drive change from within. “We have the potential to create a future that is self-sustaining, where Africa no longer depends on outside aid but thrives through its own innovation and resources,” he said.
As the continent faces significant challenges, Okwara’s message serves as a powerful reminder that Africa’s true path to development lies in its own hands. By embracing indigenous solutions and promoting self-reliance, Africa can achieve lasting progress that is both meaningful and sustainable.
