Award-Winning Teacher Shokwei V. Barsulai Reflects on Successful Return of the "Don't Touch" Initiative at Bugar Day

A year ago, the Don't Touch initiative made its debut at Bugar Day, a program aimed at raising awareness on critical issues such as child protection, mental health, menstrual health, champions against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), child abuse, talent nurturing, and the restoration of dignity, education, and the overall well-being of children. The program has since had a profound impact, and last Friday, its second visit to Bugar Day marked a significant milestone.

Shokwei V. Barsulai, an award-winning teacher and passionate advocate for children’s rights and welfare, shared her joy and pride as she reflected on the progress made through the Don't Touch initiative. "I am overjoyed to return to Bugar Day and see the positive changes the program has brought about. Over 500 boys and girls interacted with the team, and the feedback we received from the school was incredibly encouraging. The number of dropouts and early pregnancies has notably decreased, which is a direct result of the efforts made by the Don't Touch initiative," Barsulai said.

The program’s success can be attributed to its comprehensive approach, focusing on not only raising awareness but also offering practical solutions to the challenges that students face. Barsulai was particularly pleased to see that the school had embraced the Don't Touch program wholeheartedly. "I am happy to announce that Bugar Day has now fully incorporated the program, which includes both boys and girls. It is no longer just a girls-only initiative; it’s a comprehensive effort to ensure that all children, regardless of gender, are given the knowledge and support they need to thrive and protect themselves," she remarked.

During the visit, Barsulai observed a strong sense of empowerment among the students. "My heart is full. I witnessed great students, full of potential, ready to conquer the world and achieve their dreams. The energy and determination I saw in them were nothing short of inspiring," she said, beaming with pride. The students' readiness to face challenges and succeed was a clear indication of the positive impact the program had on their mindset and overall outlook on life.

One of the key highlights of the day was the school's willingness to continue the partnership with the Don't Touch initiative. "I wish to thank the entire Bugar Day family for being such wonderful hosts and for fully embracing the program. It is heartwarming to see the school take such an active role in ensuring the well-being of its students. Their support has been crucial to the success of this program," Barsulai added.

The Don't Touch initiative’s impact has gone beyond just raising awareness—it has catalyzed a cultural shift at Bugar Day, with a strong emphasis on safeguarding children from abuse, promoting mental health awareness, and addressing crucial issues such as early pregnancies. The program has fostered an environment where students can discuss these topics openly, and in doing so, it has created a safe space for personal growth and empowerment.

"Uko Bugar Day, wanasema Don't Touch," Barsulai declared with enthusiasm, referring to how the initiative has now become a recognized mantra within the school community. The slogan has gained traction and is being adopted not just by the students but also by teachers, staff, and parents, all united in their commitment to protecting the children and empowering them for the future.

In closing, Barsulai expressed her unwavering commitment to the cause, stating, "Bugar Day to the world. Let’s continue to work together to safeguard our children. Pamoja tuwalinde watoto wetu—together, let’s protect our children. This initiative is a movement, and with the support of schools like Bugar Day, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in a safe and supportive environment."

As the Don't Touch initiative continues to spread its message and grow, Barsulai’s dedication to nurturing the talents and well-being of children remains at the heart of this transformative program. The success at Bugar Day is just one of many steps toward creating a brighter, safer future for children across the country.
