Former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been sentenced to 12 years in prison or a fine of Ksh53.5 million after being found guilty of corruption-related charges. His wife, Susan Wangari, was sentenced to one year in prison or a fine of Ksh500,000. All convicted individuals have been barred from holding public office for ten years.
The charges stemmed from the fraudulent award of a Ksh588 million road construction tender to Testimony Enterprises Limited, a company associated with the Waititu family. The court found that Waititu received Ksh25 million from the company following the irregular tender award.
Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki emphasized that the actions of Waititu and his co-accused undermined public trust and good governance. He stated, "This case exemplifies a serious breach of public trust by the former governor and his co-accused. Their actions were deliberate, inexcusable, and violated the principles of good governance."
In addition to the prison sentences and fines, the court barred the convicted individuals from holding any public office for ten years. This ruling underscores the judiciary's commitment to combating corruption and promoting accountability within public offices.
The case serves as a significant reminder of the legal consequences of corruption and the importance of upholding ethical standards in public service.
