Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale Hosts Nairobi Rivers Commission to Discuss Ecosystem Regeneration

In a significant step towards the regeneration of Nairobi's river systems, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, Aden Duale, hosted the Nairobi Rivers Commission at the Ministry's headquarters. The Commission, led by Hon. Margret Wanjiru, convened to discuss the accelerated restoration of Nairobi’s river ecosystem, a key initiative championed by His Excellency President William Ruto.

During the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Duale provided updates on the National Environment Management Authority's (NEMA) Environmental Protection Regulations (EPR), which play a crucial role in enforcing the Polluter Pays Principle. This regulation mandates that manufacturers take responsibility for the waste they produce, especially waste that contaminates the country’s rivers.

The discussions also covered the progress of the Climate Worx Mtaani initiative, an ongoing cleanup project aimed at restoring the 117 km riverine ecosystem. The initiative not only focuses on environmental restoration but also integrates livelihood support, creating economic opportunities for communities along the rivers. This initiative aligns with the broader objective of enhancing climate action in the country by fostering sustainable environmental practices.

Cabinet Secretary Duale highlighted the program as part of a larger urban rivers renewal strategy, which seeks to rejuvenate waterways in cities and major towns across Kenya. This strategy is expected to contribute significantly to improving urban environmental health and creating cleaner, more sustainable cities.

The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ng'eno, who oversees the Environment and Climate Change sectors. Both Duale and Ng'eno reaffirmed the government's commitment to environmental restoration and climate action as integral parts of national development.

This collaborative effort underscores Kenya's commitment to addressing environmental challenges while promoting sustainable urban development and climate resilience.
