Chebiemit Mother and Baby Unit Commissioned to Improve Maternal Health in Marakwet West

Marakwet West residents have received a significant boost in maternal healthcare following the commissioning of a new maternity wing at Chebiemit Sub-County Hospital. Governor Wisley Rotich officially opened the facility on Thursday, marking a milestone in the county’s healthcare sector.

The state-of-the-art unit, constructed in partnership with the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SUOMI Finland), consists of an 8-bed prenatal and antenatal ward, a well-equipped delivery area, and specialized neonatal care equipment. Among the new installations are newborn incubators and a phototherapy machine, which will be used to treat jaundice and other skin conditions in infants.

Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Rotich emphasized the importance of the facility in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in the region. “This maternity wing is a game-changer for expectant mothers in Marakwet West. It will provide quality and safe maternal healthcare, ensuring that both mothers and newborns receive the best possible care,” he stated.

The new unit is also equipped with an Electrocardiogram (ECG) machine for monitoring heart conditions and a sterile wave, a modern environmental waste disposal machine that efficiently crushes medical waste. Additionally, two 40,000-litre water tanks have been installed to ensure a consistent water supply, crucial for maintaining hygiene and operational efficiency in the facility.

The event was attended by key officials from the Ministry of Health, including Erastus Karani, Nelson Kariuki, and Teresiah Kinyaga. Also present were representatives from Vameed, Lukas Landerl, and Duncan Kemboi, as well as county government officials, including CEC Monicah Rotich, Chief Officers Jeremy Chirchir and Caroline Magut, Chebiemit Medical Superintendent Prisca Kibet, and Dr. Lawrence Kogos, among other county staff.

The commissioning of the maternity wing marks a significant step in strengthening maternal healthcare services in Marakwet West, ensuring that expectant mothers receive quality care closer to home. The county government has reiterated its commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services, with further plans to improve and expand medical facilities across the region.

Residents expressed their gratitude for the initiative, noting that it will alleviate the challenges faced by expectant mothers, who previously had to travel long distances to access quality maternity care. The new facility is expected to enhance safe childbirth and improve overall maternal and neonatal health outcomes in the county.
