In a move aimed at conserving the Cherang’any ecosystem, Governor H.E. Wisley Rotich on Thursday hosted officials from the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND) at his Iten Town offices. The delegation, led by NETFUND Chief Executive Officer Samson Toniok, discussed a collaborative initiative with regional governments to restore the Cherangany ecosystem and support sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
The program, which is being supported by the Italian Government, is valued at 4 million Euros. It will focus on rehabilitating 92,000 hectares of the degraded Cherangany Forest Ecosystem, which spans across Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot Counties. This ambitious restoration project aims to implement sustainable land management practices while promoting nature-based enterprises for communities living near the forest.
The program, which will run for four years, will provide significant support to farmer cooperatives and enhance wealth creation initiatives. According to the Governor, this effort will not only protect the environment but also improve the livelihoods of residents in the area.
In a few weeks, the program will officially launch with public sensitization efforts aimed at raising awareness on the importance of the ecosystem and its preservation.
Also present at the meeting were Water and Environment County Executive Committee Member Jason Lagat and Chief Officer Isaac Write, who both voiced their support for the project and its potential benefits for local communities.
