David Maina Reveals Why Raila Odinga Lost AUC Seat, Cites Ruto’s Attacks on Muslims

Former National Youth Leader David Maina has broken his silence, revealing what he believes led to the loss of opposition leader Raila Odinga in the African Union Commission (AUC) Chair elections. In a post on his X account, Maina attributed Odinga's defeat to a series of events orchestrated by President William Ruto, which had a profound impact on the voting outcome.

Maina claimed that just one week before the crucial AUC chair elections, President Ruto launched a "vicious" campaign of insults and persecution against young Muslims in Kenya. This move, according to Maina, was closely watched by Muslim nations, which could have influenced their support in the elections.

"The Muslim countries were watching," Maina wrote, referring to the international scrutiny of Kenya’s treatment of its Muslim citizens. "This reign of terror will end and Kenya's lost prestige will be restored."

While the political fallout from the elections continues to unfold, Maina's comments have added fuel to ongoing discussions about the treatment of the Muslim community and the international image of Kenya. His statement echoes sentiments from various groups who feel marginalized by Ruto’s administration.

This revelation has sparked debate within political circles, with some questioning the president's tactics and others pointing to it as a pivotal factor in the failure of Odinga’s bid for the AUC chairmanship.

The African Union Commission, which is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the continent's strategic development plans, is a critical position, and Odinga’s loss has left many wondering what role domestic politics played in his defeat.
