The National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations, chaired by Hon. Nelson Koech, has been briefed on
𝘚𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘕𝘰. 1 𝘰𝘧 2025 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘧 𝘒𝘦𝘯𝘺𝘢. The policy outlines Kenya’s strategic priorities in diplomacy, trade, security, and international cooperation.
The meeting chaired by Hon Nelson Koech provided lawmakers with insights into key areas of Kenya’s foreign policy, including peace and security diplomacy, economic and commercial diplomacy, blue economy, global governance, climate change diplomacy, innovation, diaspora engagement, and sociocultural diplomacy.
Committee Members sought details on how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would implement the policy. Hon. Caleb Amisi questioned the absence of Parliamentary diplomacy in the policy framework,
"Where is the place of Parliamentary diplomacy in our foreign policy outlook?" he asked.
Hon. Yusuf Hassan highlighted the need for a clearer focus on engagement with the United Nations noting Kenya's crucial role as host to numerous multi-lateral agencies.
Hon. Hassan also urged the government explore ways to involve the diaspora community in funding its own programs.
“The Kenyan diaspora is largely self-sufficient. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should partner with our diaspora to fund some of the policy initiatives," he stated.
On her part, Hon. Martha Wangari sought clarification on whether the ministry had drafted amendments to the Foreign Service Act to align with emerging diplomatic priorities.
Committee Chair, Hon. Nelson Koech informed legislators that the Committee is expected to engage with the State Department on Foreign Affairs and other hey stakeholders
"We intend to engage the State Department on Foreign Affairs next week, " Hon. Koech said.
