Deputy President Kithure Kindiki addressed the media today following the announcement of Raila Odinga’s loss in the African Union Commission (AUC) elections. In a statement reflecting both respect for the democratic process and optimism for Kenya's future, Kindiki expressed his support for Odinga's hard work while emphasizing the importance of unity and continued diplomatic engagement.
“While we had hoped for a different result, we remain immensely proud of Raila Odinga’s commitment to representing Kenya on the international stage,” said Kindiki. “His efforts, along with his campaign team, have showcased a profound dedication to public service, and his loss in this contest is not a reflection of his leadership or the respect he commands across Africa.”
Kindiki acknowledged that the AUC elections were highly competitive, with many African nations vying for influence in one of the continent’s most critical positions. "Raila Odinga ran a vigorous campaign, and though the outcome was not in his favor, his passion for African unity and progress remains a beacon for us all. His vision has always been one that transcends national borders, and today’s result will not dampen the strides Kenya continues to make in regional diplomacy," he stated.
The Deputy President extended congratulations to the elected candidate, noting the importance of Kenya’s continued engagement with the African Union. "We wish the newly elected AUC Chairperson success in their role. It is crucial that we continue to advocate for Kenya’s interests and contribute to Africa’s growth. The journey does not end here."
In his remarks, Kindiki also called for national cohesion, urging all Kenyans to rise above any divisiveness and support the ongoing work at the continental level. "Let us remain united as we move forward, knowing that Kenya's leadership will always stand strong in both the African Union and the international community. Raila’s efforts will continue to inspire and push us all towards greater achievements," he said.
Concluding, Deputy President Kindiki assured Kenyans that the nation would not retreat from its leadership role in Africa. "This is just one moment in a larger journey. We may not have won this particular contest, but we will continue to play an active and significant role in shaping Africa’s future, together as one Kenya."
With Kindiki's call for unity, the government aims to turn the page and focus on strengthening Kenya’s influence in continental diplomacy, bolstering the nation’s standing in the global community.
