DG Kapkea Launches Kapchunga Water Irrigation Project to Transform Sergoit Ward

Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor  Evans Kapkea has officially launched the Kapchunga irrigation water project in Sergoit Ward, Moiben Sub-County, marking a significant step towards enhancing access to clean water and boosting agricultural productivity in the region. The initiative, which is funded under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA), is set to provide potable water and facilitate irrigation on over 40 hectares of land, benefiting more than 350 households.

During the launch event, Deputy Governor Kapkea emphasized the project's importance in transforming the lives of the local community, particularly in promoting sustainable agriculture. He underlined the employment opportunities it will generate for local youth, stating, "The contractor shall not import casual laborers from the city, as we have youth here capable of doing the work perfectly. Quality cannot be compromised." This commitment to using local talent is aimed at fostering a sense of ownership among community members.

Hon. David Keitany, the Sergoit MCA, expressed his optimism about the project's long-term impact. He praised the county's investment in agricultural and environmental infrastructure, noting that the Kapchunga initiative is a pivotal part of Uasin Gishu’s efforts to enhance sustainable development and improve the living standards of its residents. "The Kapchunga project stands out as a landmark effort in the pursuit of sustainable development and improved living standards for the residents of Sergoit Ward," said Hon. Keitany.

The project’s manager, Chief Officer for Environment and Climate Change, Mr. Mark Some, shared that the project is set to be completed within 90 days. He urged the residents to take an active role in safeguarding the project for future generations. “I want to give a stern warning that I will not pay for any works that fall short of the expected quality. This is one of the mega projects we are undertaking as a county, and we shall ensure it is successfully executed,” Mr. Some said. He also committed to promoting environmental sustainability by planting indigenous trees around the dam to protect the water source.

The Kapchunga irrigation project includes several infrastructural developments, such as the installation of pumps, solar pump inverters, solar panels, a 108-cubic meter elevated steel tank, communal water points, 5 kilometers of distribution pipes, and the fencing of intake works. The irrigation system will support the cultivation of high-value crops, including avocado, coffee, tomatoes, French beans, local beans, and various vegetables, which will enhance food security and economic opportunities for participating households.

The launch was attended by several key officials, including FLLoCA County Coordinator Ms. Abigael Kibet, Project Engineer Noah Kebenei, and Moiben Sub-County CCU Officer Mr. Bill, who all expressed their enthusiasm for the project's potential to bring lasting benefits to the community.

With the support of the local government and stakeholders, the Kapchunga irrigation project is expected to make a significant impact on Sergoit Ward, improving both agricultural productivity and water accessibility for years to come.
