Doctors' Strike at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret Called Off After Agreement

The seven-day doctors' strike at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret has officially ended after the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) reached an agreement with the hospital management. The deal, signed by KMPDU officials and led by CEO Phillip Kirwa, marks the resolution of a strike that began on February 4.

The agreement was finalized after negotiations between KMPDU leaders, including Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, Branch Chairman Dr. Darwin Ambuka, and Branch Secretary Dr. Kamunzi Mule, and the hospital's administration. Dr. Atellah announced the end of the strike, urging doctors to resume work within 24 hours.

“We are pleased that our six-day strike yielded positive results, and the issues we raised have been addressed," Dr. Atellah said. He highlighted the Treasury’s commitment to releasing funding that would ensure the full implementation of the doctors' demands. These demands included the resolution of delayed promotions, the provision of medical cover, and the employment of long-serving contract doctors.

In addition to promotions, KMPDU had also raised concerns about unpaid statutory and third-party deductions exceeding Sh1 billion and Sh600 million in bank loan remittances. Dr. Atellah confirmed that these issues would be resolved as agreed upon.

The strike had been triggered by frustrations over unfulfilled promises, particularly regarding promotions, medical cover, and contract renewals. Dr. Atellah expressed satisfaction that the hospital had committed to addressing these challenges, and that doctors would immediately begin receiving their promotion letters.

Dr. Kirwa, CEO of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, expressed relief that the strike was over, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to providing uninterrupted services. “We are back to full operations and assure our clients of quality services as usual,” Dr. Kirwa said. He also reiterated that the hospital would continue collaborating with unions and staff to ensure smooth operations moving forward.

The resolution of the strike is expected to bring stability to the hospital, which had been significantly impacted by the industrial action. Both the doctors' union and the hospital management expressed hope that the agreement would prevent future strikes and promote constructive collaboration in the future.
