DP Kindiki Encourages Kenyans to Register for Social Health Authority

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on all Kenyans to register themselves and their dependents with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to ensure universal access to affordable and quality healthcare services. Speaking at the Embu County Boda Boda Summit on Saturday, Deputy President Kindiki highlighted the government's commitment to expanding healthcare access through the Taifa Care Programme, which aims to provide health coverage for all citizens.

The Deputy President noted significant progress, with the number of Kenyans enrolled under the SHA rising to 18.5 million, up from 9 million who were previously registered under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). "This is a major step towards achieving universal healthcare in our country. We are making great strides to ensure every Kenyan has access to health services, regardless of their economic status," Kindiki said.

To address challenges encountered in the implementation of the Taifa Care Programme, Kindiki also announced that the government will review the Means Testing Tool, which evaluates the eligibility of individuals based on their income levels. This review will ensure that all Kenyans, including informal sector workers such as boda boda riders, can access health coverage.

"We recognize that boda boda riders play an integral role in our economy and should be included in our national health programs. To support their well-being, we will make sure the system accommodates them,” Kindiki added, urging boda boda riders to join Saccos (Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies) to gain access to affordable credit and embrace a culture of saving for their financial security.

The event saw the attendance of over 10,000 boda boda riders from across Embu County, who gathered for the launch of the Embu County Boda Boda Strategic Plan 2024-2027. Deputy President Kindiki was joined by Embu County Governor Cecily Mbarire, Deputy Governor Kinyua Mugo, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and several other distinguished leaders. Among those present were Senator Alexander Mundigi, MPs Eric Muchangi, Geoffrey Ruku, Herbert Muriuki, Jane Kagiri, Reuben Kiborek, and Japheth Nyakundi. Additionally, County Assembly Speaker Josiah Thiriku, Senior Advisor to the President Moses Kuria, and various Principal Secretaries from key government sectors also participated in the summit.

Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the government's commitment to empowering boda boda riders and the broader informal sector. "We are committed to uplifting the livelihoods of our citizens, especially those in informal employment. This summit is part of a broader strategy to ensure that all Kenyans, regardless of their occupation, have the opportunity to access quality healthcare and financial services," he stated.

The Boda Boda Summit also highlighted the strategic plan to improve the welfare of riders, with key initiatives focused on their safety, financial inclusion, and social security. Through these efforts, the government aims to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for boda boda riders, who form a vital part of Kenya’s transportation network.
