Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away after a week-long battle with an undisclosed illness. Chebukati, who served as the head of the electoral body for a full six-year term, died at 11:00 pm on Thursday in a Nairobi hospital, where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Details about the exact nature of his ailment have not been made public. The former IEBC boss had been receiving medical treatment at the facility for nearly a week before his death.
Chebukati retired from his post as IEBC chair in January 2023, after overseeing critical electoral processes in the country, including the highly contested 2022 presidential election. His leadership was both praised and critiqued, but his tenure was undeniably marked by significant milestones in Kenya's electoral history.
